About Us

The Melbourne Patterns Group had its first meeting on February 3rd 1999, and has gathered for discussion of software design patterns regularly ever since. Current meeting frequency is every four weeks, except for a Christmas break, and the meeting night is Wednesday. The meeting format is two part, designed to satisfy patterns newcomers and more experienced practitioners alike. All interested people are welcome.

Meeting Format

6:30 pm: start time, food.

6:45 pm: Part I: Discussion of a design pattern from Design Patterns – Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software by Gamma, Helm, Johnson and Vlissides ( the GOF, for Gang of four ). This discussion will be led by a participant who knows the pattern, and the objective will be introduce newcomers to the pattern – as well as to consolidate understanding amongst the rest.

7:30 pm ( approx ): Part II Exploration of a new pattern or related topic, eg Refactoring, Christopher Alexander’s Architectural patterns….
